Help your Child's Emotional Well-being with Musical Games

Musical expressions are an excellent tool for parents who want to help their children to express themselves easily.

Music has a natural healing ability on the human psyche, and children who have a strong musical background do better in school, are more well-adjusted, and also are more intelligent than children who don't have music in their lives.

Here are 10 ways to get your child's self-expression on the fast track with music as therapy.

1. Sign your child up for a dance class

Interpretive dance has been shown to improve a child's ability to develop grace, and it has also been proven to help children express themselves in a positive way. Children who dance often have a very lively social life, too.

2. Let your child drum out their anger 

Drumming has been used as a way to express one's anger, excitement, and other emotions since the dawn of time. Teach your child how to use percussion instruments, and watch their artistic expression blossom.

The best part of this option is that you don't really have to teach them anything – drumming is instinctual. This is a great therapy tool!

3. Teach your child to paint or draw to music

Musical expressions can tell a great story, so why not use it to help guide them when they draw? It could help unlock feelings that they didn't know that they even had.

4. Let your child explore different genres of songs and tunes

Take them to a series of concerts and let them learn about which music genres really speak to them. Don't be upset if your child chooses to listen to a more controversial genre – the fact is that music appreciation comes in all forms, and listening to your favorite songs and notes will always have a calming effect on you.

5. Try to encourage your child to compose their own music

All you need to do in order to teach your child how to compose their own music is to buy them a xylophone (or use a piano), teach them the different musical notes, and possibly give them some music theory lessons.

6. Get your child to try a rap battle with you

Rap battles emphasize wit, and also encourage children to say what they are feeling in a lyrical, fun, and musical way. Be careful with this activity, because feelings can get hurt if you don't explain the rules. You can also encourage your child to write rap songs.

7. Sign up your child for a class which features the musical instrument of their choice

It might be more expensive than other options on this list, but getting your child guitar lessons might be the way to calm them down after school.

8. Play certain songs to help your child into relaxation mode

This method has a very Pavlovian reason why it works – kids will soon establish a cause and effect mentality in regards to certain songs if you play them at certain points in their life. Playing the same song when they go to bed will eventually signal that it's time to sleep.

9. Teach your child to meditate to music

Rhythmic swaying has been proven to relax children, and swaying to the right music might be what you need in order to stop temper tantrums from happening later on. This is a great therapy to try with anxious kids.

10. Take your child to a professional music therapy session
