10 Reflection Activities for Kids

Help your Child Become Self Reflective

These activities help child learn to be reflective. One of the most important factors to aid in the development in kids is providing them with the ability to partake in self reflection and understanding the emotions that they feel throughout their lives.

This will inevitably help them to mature and better themselves as they reach older ages. Below is a compiled list of hands-on activities that can assist your kids in achieving a higher understanding of themselves.

1. Journal Writing

As an activity participated in through the teenage community, having your children partake in journal writing will provide them with the tools necessary to write their emotions down. Expelling excess feelings can help to establish coping scenarios for both the children and the parent.

2. Creating Collages

Collages provide children with a fun activity that will help to work their brains simultaneously. Creating a personal collage allows them to establish what their interests are and what they wish to pursue in the future. Providing children with the ability to understand themselves and what they are made up of can be beneficial as well.

3. Creating a Feeling Activity Board

Feeling boards are essentially a tool to help kids label their feelings and to recognize the emotions that they are feeling. It allows children to write their feelings down and post them on the board so that it promotes discussion about feelings and why they are feeling a certain emotion.

4. Emotion Thermometers

Much like feeling boards, emotion thermometers also increase the amount of discussion that occurs between children and the rest of the family. You allow the child to rate their emotion from a scale of 1-10 based on the thermometer.

5. Painting and Drawing

Painting allows children to express themselves through art. Based on the colors that are used and the brush techniques you will be better equipped to understand their emotions and you can review the painting that they created with them. Read more here.

6. Creating a Goal Journal

Allowing your child to actively set out goals on a sheet of paper will increase their ability to achieve them. The more goals that a child achieves will in turn allow them to understand their utmost amount of abilities. Read about Journaling here.

7. Utilize Mirrors

Considering that many children experience difficulties speaking about their emotions with their parents, having them speak to a mirror may be easier to them. Provide them with a recent event that made them feel a certain way and ask them to think about it and reflect upon it.

8. Event Reflection

After a daily even such as a sports game or finishing a written exam, have your child explain two beneficial things that happened during the event and one thing that they wish to improve for next time. Read more here. 

9. Construct a Box of Positive Quotes

Having your child read a positive quote every day will help them to increase their overall self esteem which will encourage positive self reflection.

10. Partake in Community Service

Children who give back to the community will be able to learn about different situations in life. It will also encourage them to perform more civil duties in the future and help to curb their future.
