Healthy After School Snacks for Children

Nutritious Food Kids will Love

Every parent goes through the same challenge when looking for healthy after school snacks for the kids. Of course, when they get home they've already been several hours without food, so they will be hungry when they arrive home. It's a hard job keeping the kids from eating sugary, high calorie food. The way to get them to eat healthy snacks is to think and plan ahead.

As long as you remember they haven't eaten anything since lunch time, then you'll be able to control what they eat as soon as they walk in the door. Keeping them from grabbing a bag of chips will be tough because they are so much easier than waiting until you fix them a sandwich. The key to healthy snacks for kids is to prepare for the homecoming.

Keeping them from grabbing a bag of chips will be tough because they are so much easier than waiting until you fix them a sandwich. The key to healthy snacks for kids is to prepare for the homecoming.

In the beginning, you might have to trick them into eat healthy food, but after a while, they will expect the healthy food. Offering them a carrot or apple when they are "technical" starving to death just won't do. You have to have a sandwich, soup, or other foods already waiting for them. If you have to hide the bag of chips, then do so; however, if you offer them a few chips to go with the sandwich, then it will be easier to "wean" them off of the chips and just offer healthy foods. They won't even notice.

Soup laden with veggie they hate will cause them to turn the noses up, but if you make soup with vegetables they like, even if you don't like them, they will eat it. After school snacks have to supply enough calories to reboot their energy levels, and that means they need protein and fiber to gratify their hunger. A ham and cheese sandwich with a few chips will take care of the kid's hunger. Add some juice, whether its fruit or vegetable juice will give them an added boost. And not just in nutrients, but the juice also boost their energy levels.

When you first start to change their diet to healthy snacks, a plate of different fruit just won't do it unless you make a face or animal design out of the fruit. It still won't give them enough energy to last until dinner. They still need protein. Protein can be meat, dairy products such as yogurt or eggs. Be sure you use the Greek style yogurt – most other yogurt is loaded with sugar and very little protein.

Another way is to create a hat or basket of skewers loaded with meat, fruit, and vegetables. Add a cup of their favorite flavored yogurt to dip in and you have a perfect, healthy snack for kids. Some teenagers might even like it.

When you want your kids to eat an apple, you might want to make a smoothie out of it and stick it in the freezer for 20 minutes. It almost has the same texture as ice cream. So just before the kids arrive home, make the smoothie and put it in the freezer for when they finish their snack. They'll think they are getting an extra snack of ice cream when it's really a frozen smoothie.

There are many ways to get your kids to eat healthy you just have to think ahead and use your imagination on the same level as the kids. Healthy food doesn't have to be boring for the kids when you can take a little time to give them healthy after school snacks that are fun. Soon they won't mind not having funny faces made out of vegetables.
