Improving academic performance is strongly linked to developing children's emotional intelligence skills (EI). Self- esteem is another factor affecting children's academic results. Programs that develop children emotional wellbeing have been shown to have a positive effect on grades.
EI skills can help kids improve their grades quite significantly. Children and teenagers often struggle with the emotions of feeling overwhelmed by academic work. Students in a Child Development Project School had greater cooperative skills, were more helpful, and showed greater empathy. They also found they were able to sort out their differences by themselves without adult help. Kids at these schools were also fully committed to democratic virtues like justice and fairness.
Children who participated in 25 lessons a year in the Resolving Conflict Creatively Program curriculum (A violence prevention program which is underpinned by emotional development lessons) were shown to be improving academic performance on standardized achievement tests than other kids.
Over two years, the Responsive Classroom group had much better results on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills.
High grades and self esteem are strongly linked. An evaluation of three groups of students at age eighteen found that had participated in the full social development program from grades one through six were were less likely to use alcohol or drugs, were less to be sexually active, were involved in fewer acts of violence and were better behaved in school.
