Theory of Emotional Intelligence

What is the theory of emotional intelligence? The term has been around for a while. It is used in general to describe the ability to control, assess and identify emotions and then using and regulating them to achieve a goal. This can be done with self, others or groups. It is a way to regulate emotions and promote personal growth. EI has been used to explain why at times those with a very high IQ may not always succeed in life, while others with perhaps a lower IQ but high emotional intelligence fare very well. It has been noted that those who hone their EI are able to read the emotions of those around them and adapt. EI has four theorized types of abilities. The perceiving of emotions. This is the ability to detect emotion in oneself, in others, through facial expressions, pictures, voices and other means.

The use of the emotions perceived. This is the ability to think, solve problems and change one's own mood to fit the circumstance and accomplish a task.

Understanding emotion. Emotions are complex and have subtle variances. Understanding these changes and subtleties and how they interact is the third ability.

The last ability is managing emotion. It is the use of emotion in ourselves and others harnessed (whether negative emotion or positive emotion) to achieve a set goal.

While we are born with our IQ, EI is something that can be improved upon. Through practice and training, it is believed that we can build up this emotional intelligence and become quite proficient in our use and understanding of emotions. One theory emphasizes the increase of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management as keys to successful development in this area.

Benefits of EQ

he benefits to having emotional intelligence vary and affect almost every aspect of life. One way is in business. When one is able to read and channel emotion, they know what others want and need, they can then adapt to this. For this reason many business and corporations have implemented different aspects of emotional intelligence training in the workplace. Teachers and caregivers too are finding that emotional intelligence has a positive affect on children and their development. It has been noted that an increase in self-awareness and an awareness in others leads to better relationships. Self confidence and an ability to adapt to situations is another benefit. Being able to communicate and show understanding of others are important qualities to develop, whatever our age.

There are numerous theories of emotional intelligence. The perception, assessment and use of emotion is no doubt beneficial. There are ways to improve our abilities in these areas. The emotional development of teens and children can be encouraged through various emotional intelligence exercises. Look into it for yourself, or for your family. You are bound to find that the benefits are worth it.
