How can Children Learn to Manage Stressful Situations?

Many children feel school-related stressors like poor grades, hostile friendships, test pressure and personality clashes with other kids or adults in the school. 

Occasional or moderate stress can be healthy, however who are constantly stressed may have more illness, missed school days and feelings of inadequacy. 

Building emotional intelligence and stress management work hand in hand. It can wreck havoc on your child's gut health. It can cause a host of problems that affect your child. Check out the stress symptoms in children.

Learning cannot take place when the mind is stressed. The learning brain goes through different stages when it is not relaxed. Some children can feel emotionally hijackedwhen they don't know an answer, need to give a presentation or are bullied by other children. 

This feeling of being overwhelmed can be triggered by simple things like finding a substitute teacher or a child finding he has forgotten his homework at home. Teaching children how to manage their own levels of stressors is a skill that will help them into adulthood.

There are many free games for kids that will help reduce stressful feelings in kids. By helping children to manage their it we provide them with tools that will help them well into the future. Teaching emotional intelligence in schools is crucial.

Good nutrition is essential for children. Eating right helps keep the brain and the body ready to face challenges. Eating a healthy breakfast is a key thing children need to start their day.

  1. Sleep patterns can affect stressful feelings as well. Children need adequate rest every night. 8-9 hours are recommended for children aged 6-10. Toddlers and teenagers need additional sleep of about 9-10 hours per night.
  2. Exercise is a key way to reduce stress. Getting kids outside playing ball, going for a walk or skipping rope will do wonders to reduce stress. Exercise for stress release is paramount.
  3. Deep breathing is also a great way to induce relaxation in children.
  4. Journal Writing is a wonderful way for older children to reduce and relieve stress and emotions. By looking back over their journals in the future they will see that they overcame obstacles before. Read more here.

Activities to Try Manage Stress

Throw Away 

  • Ask your child to write down things that are stressing them out on a piece of paper
  • Read it with your child (or they may prefer not to show you)
  • Rip the paper up and throw it away
  • This symbolic throwing away of the stressful event may help to remove some of the negative emotions
